SCARBOROUGH SCORES AT JUNIOR WORLD CUP        9/21/2002

Evelyn Scarborough made our division’s and her own debut on the junior world scene at the Louisville Junior “A” Women’s Epee competition on September 21. The field of 53 fencers included top fencers from various foreign countries and USA point holders, so the field was very strong.

According to eye witness accounts (Coach Sharron Settlemire and friend Clint Bowers) she was fencing stronger than ever. She had a 4-1 record in the pool round, losing only to eventual bronze medalist Keri Byerts from the Western New York Division. She was seeded 6th into the direct elimination rounds. In the round of 32, she drew Erica Emery of Canada. Emery is ranked 5th on Canada’s Junior Women’s Epee point standings. In a tough bout, Evelyn was defeated 12-15. She ended up 18th in the final results.

Evelyn’s results from the Junior World Cup boosted her to 22nd on the Junior Women’s Epee USA Rolling Points, 9th on the Junior Women’s Epee Team Points, and gave her an new FIE Junior Women’s Epee ranking of 146! Congratulations to Evelyn for her outstanding international debut, and we wish her continued luck as she sets out to reach the top.

Also worth noting from our section, Erin McGarry ended up in the top 8, and Kelley Hurley finished in the top 16.
