ALM MEDAL in RICHMOND NAC                                                Division results here.

RICHMOND, VA - Personifying the phrase "on any given day, any fencer can beat any other fencer" Terry Harkey came from 25th seed to bring home the 8th place medal and a D07 in the Veteran 50-59 Women's Epee event.

Harkey won only a single bout in pools to seed into the D.E. table at 25th of the 32 vet 50 women.  The first direct elimination round was against 8th seed, Delores Theriault.  Taking cues from her coach, Justin Meehan, Harkey gained two touches and an apparent mental edge on her opponent, who received a yellow card after punching her tip into the strip several times, indicating her level of frustration.  The bout ended 10-9 advancing Harkey to the 16.

The next bout was with Hungarian Agota Ballot, seeded 9th.  Again, Harkey applied the coaches advice and got a 3 point lead on Ballot.  However, just before the break, Ballot began to recover her head game and had caught up to within a point.  The following 3 minutes forced Ballot to agress which ended the bout in a double.

The last bout was with Alabama's Marianne Bosco.  Bosco performed with an excellent game and only allowed a couple of touches before she claimed her victory.

Other highlights from Richmond:

Both Jack Harkey and Evelyn Scarborough made the cut in the Division 1 Epee.  For Harkey it was his first time to cross that barrier, and while he did not win his D.E. against his highly seeded opponent, he did very well considering.  Scarborough went 2/3 in pools but seemed to be coming back winning her first d.e. and taking a strong, quick lead on Keri Byerts, but Byerts pulled out and came back stronger putting Scarborough out prematurely.

Garrett Strickland competed in Division 1 Men's Foil, but missed the cut, while his coach John "Doc" Matthews took 13th in the Vet 60 Men's Foil, while he was 40th in Vet 60 Men's Epee.

Catherine Vanderloos finished 12th in the Vet 50 Women's Sabre and 24th in the Vet 50 Women's Epee.
