Day Two
After a good breakfast, Evelyn was down at the Sunset Ballroom at 10am to warm up for the final 8 bouts of Women's Epee. At 10:30am she fenced Cynthia Erickson (Southern California). She took a strong lead and finished the bout 15-7. In the semifinals she drew A-rated Holly Buechel. Evelyn started with a 3-1 lead, with the score staying within one touch up to the last two minutes of the third period. Evelyn was able to regain the lead and finished the bout with a 15-12 victory. The final bout was scheduled to begin at 2pm in order to facilitate TV taping, but strip problems kept the women's epee final from starting until 4pm. Evelyn's opponent was Anna Garina (A-rated, Ukraine). The left-hander is ranked 73rd on the World Senior Women's Epee point standings, well above the highest U.S. Senior Women's epeeist. The atmosphere was intense, with bright lights on either end of the strip, numerous TV cameras, and a huge crowd. Garina took a 2-0 lead at first, fighting Evelyn for a tough two periods, closing the bout with a 15-10 victory. Evelyn took 2nd place, with an etched glass tumbler, but the best reward was renewing her B rating to a B 2003.
