With the snow flurries of Thursday gone and only bone chilling cold remaining, cadet men's epee and junior men's sabre events opened this season's full throttle, powerful competition known as Junior Olympics.
Men's epee began on time with a huge number. However, men's sabre was to have a minimum of 3 flights. All of the men's epee fencers had some incredible experiences. Chris Gardner and Daniel Brown both won one bout but was just under the dreaded 'line' that divides the "ups and downs" which indicates who moves up into the direct elimination phase and who doesn't .
Men's Results Cadet (U17) Epee - (177 participants - 80% = 142
promoted)
143rd - Chris Gardner
162nd - Daniel Ewing
167th - Addison Lacy
Men's Results Junior (U20) Sabre - (146 participants - 80% = 117
promoted)
125th - Daniel Brown
129th - Sam Hunt
139th - Scott Jennings
Later in the women's event, LeAnn Moore won a pool bout in U17 women's foil, and Trena Edwards won two bouts insuring her place above the line. LeAnn missed the line, but Trena went up and was rewarded by fencing a great foilist Miss Pensler. Trena did a great job and made several very nice single lights against this fine fencer.
Women's Results Cadet (U17) Foil - (157 participants - 80% = 127
promoted)
113th - Trena Edwards
130th - LeAnn Moore

By 9:45, the men were rarin' to go in pools, and it wasn't going really well until suddenly Patrick Mooney won one, then Noam Platt won one and then William Hock won one, then William won another one and Patrick won another one.. it got very exciting!!
Soon, pools ended and when they posted the direct elimination tableau, Patrick was paired with Andersen and William drew another well vetted fencer as well. Both guys fenced VERY well - looked great - but experience won out in the end.
Men's Results Cadet (U17) Foil - ( 246 participants - 80% = 197
promoted )
176 -Patrick Mooney
182 -William Hock
212 -Noam Platt
236 -Daniel Ewing
The only female competitor today was LeAnn Moore who was in the cadet (U17)
women's epee event. Her pool was amazingly strong, but she managed to pull
out one win. Problem was, she was in a six man pool - which lowered her
indicators drastically and she did not make the line.
Women's Results Cadet (U17) Epee - (118 participants - 80% = 95 promoted)
107 -LeAnn Moore

Jack Harkey & Daniel Brown got things rollin' in junior men's epee pools around 9:30 (after a reseed). Daniel was looking good with one victory, but didn't pull the second one off! Jack had a decent pool but wasn't having any luck with the fencers. However he managed to pull out two wins putting him above the line. After seeding, Jack won his first D.E. and prepared for his second one. He lost it 14-15.

Meanwhile - Trena had checked in and was warming up for junior women's foil. She had the dreaded "pool from Hades" with 3 of 6 fencers in her pool being lefties, with 5 VERY good opponents. Trena did not win any bouts, but this was an experience that will eventually be remembered as bumping the learning curve a bit.
Women's Results Junior (U20) Foil - (170 participants - 80% = promoted
136)
158 -Trena Edwards
Later in the afternoon, men's cadet sabre began in flights. Patrick
Mooney made some extremely good scores and touches. Layne LeBleu and
Douglas Smith made their national debut in this event. Douglas had a
thrilling bout in which he won 5-1. Finally, Addison Lacy's strip
was assigned and he also won a bout.

WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR THE DIVISION!!!
Yours truly had to make an airport run at 8, but I got back in time to see the pool bouts featuring James Woolbert, Ken Williams and Patrick Mooney. Ken took 4 of the 6 guys in his pool for a great seeding. Patrick and James won a bout each. Patrick beat an "A" fencer!
When seedings for D.E.'s were posted, we were all very excited for James that he had made the line!! James went into his D.E. against Leffner though he didn't win it, he did very well. On the disappointing side, Ken's hopes for a good placement in the Junior event was dashed when he somehow ended up with Dollar in the first D.E and lost.
Men's Results Junior (U20) Foil - (236 participants - 80% = 189
promoted)
135th - Ken Williams
178th - James Woolbert
195th - Patrick Mooney
Our only female sabreur, Kira Colvin started pools and did very well winning several bouts and promoting across the line to the direct elimination phase. She drew Miss Shon, an excellent sabreur.
Women's Results Cadet (U17) Sabre - (78 participants - 80% = 63
promoted)
43rd - Kira Colvin
Junior women's epee check-in closed at noon and pools began around 1:15 for Sarah Day, Dorothy Hubbard, with DanaTakach held for the second flight. Sarah did well winning 2 bouts. Dorothy was in a small pool, won 4, lost one. She wasn't really pleased with that, but she did promote into D.E.s and started well by sounding winning her first one. Followed by a great 2nd one and then into the points (round of 32). She then had to face Willock for the 16. She beat her and then beat Brendler for the 8. She finally lost to Krista French in the 8.
Women's Results Junior (U20) Epee - (136 participants - 80% = 109
promoted)
8th - Dorothy Hubbard
87th - Sarah Day
132nd - Dana Takach
