Evelyn Scarborough arrived at 7:30 for the 8am Division I-A Women's Epee event
on Saturday. Seeded 10th of 69 into pools, she defended her high seed and
finished undefeated, 5-0, including a victory over former US National Team
member Eleanor Leighton. This placed her 5th into direct eliminations, where she
drew a bye into the round of 64. She first faced Louise Leighton and had a
difficult time finding her pace. However, in the last period she began seeing
single lights and secured her victory 15-10. In the round of 32 she fenced
fellow Southwest Section member Karen Johnson. Both remained even throughout the
bout, but Evelyn pulled ahead and kept her defense up to hold another victory
15-12. In the 16 Evelyn again drew another Southwest fencer, 2004 US Cadet team
member Christa French. Both fencers stayed even with a mix of attacks and
successful parry-ripostes and Evelyn had attained the lead in the last period of
9-7. However, French made a comeback in the final minutes to tie the score 9-9.
In the overtime round, Scarborough had priority but allowed a touch by French to
lose the bout 10-9.
Although disappointed by missing the finals, Scarborough was pleased with her 11th place finish
