The "Rose" Features "A" Sabre Event
January 31, 2004

SHREVEPORT, LA - Regional sabre fencers were delighted at the prospect that the 4th annual Rose Condon Memorial Tournament was a potential "A" mixed sabre event featuring our regional sabre Top Gun, Steve Ahn (Dallas), and our favorite New York import, Matt Zich.

Zich flew to Shreveport for the event and reported having a great time meeting all the fencers from our area.  He also expressed appreciation for the nature of the tournament, which is held in the memory of Rose Condon to benefit her memorial scholarship fund, and his desire to return (with friends) next year, schedules willing.

In the end, with 31 fencers from the region, the event was rated as an "A2", awarding a total of 9 new and renewed classifications including an "A04" to Zich who won the event.   Our own Ark-La-Miss sabreurs, Lee London and Sam Hunt left their E's for a great upgrade to a C04 for London and a D04 for Hunt.

This was the first locally sponsored "A" sabre event in the history of the Ark-La-Miss division, and cursory research generated the general idea that if it was not the first in the section, it was the first in anyone's memory, discounting of course national events which occasionally are hosted in Texas.
