RICHMOND, VA - On the final day, Evelyn Scarborough took strip with the intention to earn the national points she has been looking for at the Division 1 Women's Epee. Scarborough dominated in her pool, winning 4 bouts ensuring a good placement after the 40% cut into the second round of pools. She knew if she only won 2 of her next pool, she could possibly move up, but to secure a spot in the 32, she had to win 3, which she proceeded to accomplish. She went into the 32 at 23rd place.
Scarborough wins to advance in second round.
After the bye, she lost her first d.e. followed by a win in the next, placing her in the 24. She was paired in the 3rd d.e. with former Cornell teammate Phair. Scarborough led most of the d.e. and in the final moments, it was tied, forcing a coin toss. Scarborough lost the coin toss and subsequently the bout, but will still earn the highly desired national rolling points and is pleased with the firm place from which she has to start.
Clint Bowers reports he's pretty happy with the results of his debut in the Div 1 world. On Friday, Bowers won 2 of his pool bouts and was just one touch short of the "line" in the first round of pools in Division 1 Men's Epee on Friday. Many highly classed fencers didn't make the first 40% cut in this brutal format that includes two rounds of pools each allowing only 60% of the fencers to advance to the next round. There were 178 fencers of which 83 were classed "A". Clint finished on the "second page" at 114th.
Saturday in the Veteran Women's Epee event, Catherine Vanderloos won several pool bouts and earned herself a nice placement into the d.e. table. She won her first d.e. and finished 29th in the field of 60. Terry Harkey met all her goals, the premiere of which was not having to run the divisional tournament and try to qualify for summer nationals at the same time. Secondary to that goal was "not to finish last" in this combined age veteran event. Coming in at 53rd, that was accomplished with even some cushion room.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS!!!
