Louisiana State High School Championships
March 25-26, 2006, Shreveport, Louisiana
Daniel Ewing and Elise Ackley successfully defended their State Fencing Champ titles in exciting final bouts at the Louisiana State High School Fencing Championships. Both athletes are juniors and already the pressure is on for their final year. The championships were started in 2001-2002 school year with juniors and seniors taking some of the titles for the first two years. Because the tournament is young, this year is the first year that fencers have held the title for more than 2 years.
Men's sabre followed the two epee events with Louisiana division's Billy Moses celebrating his18th birthday by taking the title.
On Sunday a very small turnout for the women's sabre yielded three local ladies who fenced off for the championship title. When the dust settled, Elise Ackley took home the trophy.
In the men's foil, it came down to two fencers from Lafayette, senior Jacob Luby and Sam Schumacher. It was the time honored battle of age vs. youth, and this time, Luby was able to keep the younger fencer at bay, taking home the championship title.
Women's foil enjoyed a healthy attendance with uncommonly good fencing during the day. The final bout was between Amanda Hock (Southfield School) and Anna Schumacher from Lafayette. The home court advantage was not enough to put Hock over the edge and Schumacher took her out to win the championship for this season.
Next season, the championship will be held in the early fall. Be looking for information available in late July or early August.
